In a broad sense, I am an abstract artist. All my work is non-representational, focusing on the interaction of color. But the term “abstract art” encompasses a wide range of styles and techniques. I identify myself as a Contemporary Op Artist. Learn more.
What is Op Art?
Op Art, short for Optical Art, is an art movement that emerged in the 1960s. It is characterized by the use of optical illusions, geometric patterns, and precise, often repetitive, arrangements of shapes and colors to create visual effects that can be disorienting or create the illusion of movement. Op Art aims to engage the viewer’s perception and create optical effects that challenge the boundaries between two- and three-dimensional space. As a colorist, I develop the illusions through squares or lines of carefully chosen colors.
I enjoy the role that mathematics plays in my work and the process of layer upon layer of colors that are applied using varying widths of masking tape to create the final result — which is something that I can’t see until the last piece of tape is removed.
