November 4, 2020

This is an original acrylic on panel op art painting “November 4 2020.” The title refers to the date I began work on this piece. It measures 24″ X 24″ X 2″ and is part of my “Asterism Series” of contemporary op art works. The term “asterism” refers to the “X” that appears to the eye — but does not exist in the painting — and occurs when contiguous colors interact from light to dark or dark to light. I am influenced by the Op Artists of the 1960s and 1970s — especially Julian Stanczak, Carlos Cruz Diez, and Richard Anuszkiewicz. I have finished all four sides, so no frame is needed. Please scroll down for detailed images.

Most recently, this piece was included in Viridian Artists Gallery’s 33rd Annual International Juried Exhibition in NYC! This is the second time one of my pieces has been accepted in this gallery’s juried shows. Viridian is located at 548 West 28th Street, Suite 632, New York, NY, in the arts-centric Chelsea neighborhood.

This painting was exhibited in the “Art of the State 2022” at The State Museum of Pennsylvania from September 11, 2022 – January 15, 2023. 1850 works were submitted, and 92 were chosen. It also was selected for the Gallery Choice Award, All Abstraction, 2022 International Juried Online Exhibition, July 2022. It was also included in the juried exhibition “Light Within” at MH Art Gallery 42 W Market St, Marietta. The show ran from February 9 through March 31, 2024, and was selected to be displayed in the gallery’s front window to promote the show. In September 2024, it was accepted into the Allied Artists of America’s 111th Annual Exhibition. This online show runs through Sept. 2025.

Why does that “X” appear in my Asterism paintings? This visual deception is an example of simultaneous contrast.

Simultaneous contrast, or the contrast effect, is a visual phenomenon where the perception of one color is affected by the presence of surrounding colors. Specifically, the brightness, saturation, and even the hue of a color can be altered by the colors surrounding it. Learn more about simultaneous contrast.
