February 23, 2023

Entitled “February 23, 2023,” this is an original hardedge abstract acrylic on panel painting. It is part of my “Asterism Series” of contemporary op art works. The term “asterism” refers to the “X” that appears to the eye — but does not exist in the painting — and occurs when contiguous colors interact from light to dark or dark to light. It measures 24” x 24” and is painted on a 2” deep cradle frame. This piece is finished on all sides, so no frame is required.

This painting was accepted in the 2025 Juried Abstract Exhibition, Covet Gallery, Oceanside, California, April 15 to May 10, 2025. The gallery’s Instagram post regarding my work included this awesome caption:

“Like a sunrise on a pixelated screen — this piece takes you back and pulls you forward all at once. A grid of tiny squares shifts from deep purple to electric yellow, glowing with vintage vibes and analog rhythm. Think disco lights, lava lamps, and lo-fi daydreams.” Love it! Learn more.

My primary influence for this piece was Julian Stanczak, one of the leaders of the Op Art Movement of the 1960s and 1970s. That term was first coined following a review of Stanczak’s solo exhibition at Martha Jackson Gallery, entitled “Optical Paintings.” Click here to read my blog on Julian Stanczak’s inspirational life.

My Asterism Series of Abstract Paintings

Why does that “X” appear in my Asterism paintings? This visual deception is an example of simultaneous contrast.

Simultaneous contrast, or the contrast effect, is a visual phenomenon where the perception of one color is affected by the presence of surrounding colors. Specifically, the brightness, saturation, and even the hue of a color can be altered by the colors surrounding it. Click here to read my blog on simultaneous contrast.

A design similar to this is also available as a fine art Giclee print through my Etsy Shop – click here.
