March 4, 2020

Entitled “March 4 2020,” this is a 12″ x 12″ acrylic on a deep-cradled wood panel. It is an example of my “Asterism” series of paintings, which explore the optical phenomenon of the “X” that appears to the eye when a color lightens or darkens toward the center. No actual “X” is created; it only appears that way when viewed. Hopefully, this optical illusion is clear in the photos — it is quite evident in person. I borrowed that term from gemologists who use it to describe the star effect in Star Sapphires, Tiger Eyes, and so on. I have several other Asterism Series paintings in the works, and will post them here when completed. I do most of my paintings on deep-cradled panels with painted sides, so no frame is needed. I create Geometric Hardedge Abstract paintings, influenced by the Op Artists of the 1960s-70s, especially Julian Stanczak and Richard Anuszkiewicz.
